How did you become an Atheist?
As a child I never had to go to church because my family didn't. I wasn't indoctrinated in the Bible, however, since I grew up mostly in the American mid-west, religion was still all around me so I picked up on a few things here and there. Because of propaganda from the church I thought Atheism was almost a bad word.
So for most of my life I was an agnostic deist but I didn't know what it was called. It became clear to me at an early age (perhaps the 4th or 5th grade) that praying was useless because either god doesn't care or simple isn't there. I never believed in Creationism, I always accepted Evolution as fact and still do, so being a fan of science and history I began to piece together a model of how religion could have possibly began and what the people were like that wrote the Bible. When I realized that it was pretty much invented by a bunch of animal-sacrificing primitives who were desperately trying to hold on to their cultural traditions, it seemed that any theory of where everything comes from was as good as the next.
I realized that all we, as people can really know is what we can observe in the natural world, the supernatural world that we can not observe is irrelevant if it even exists. Since there has never been a single thread of evidence to support the supernatural, I abandoned Agnosticism and became an Atheist.
